The idea is that the primary users of Northern roads – the professional drivers – are harnessed to serve all road users. By providing professionals with the Porokello device, they're able to notify other drivers of reindeer on or near the roads.
Effective and simple: By pressing a button, the driver sends to other approaching vehicles a warning of reindeer ahead.
After receiving the warning via Porokello mobile app or the car’s navigation system, drivers know to continue cautiously and to be aware of any four-legged surprises on the road.
Porokello-reindeer warning system is starting a new pilot by launching Reindeer Coop –mobile application. The idea of the pilot is that private road users can join in the system to generate and receive reindeer – and other traffic related warnings – with mobile app. Now we are looking for users to join in the pilot. Please join the pilot!

Coordinated by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Lapland, Porokello is launching a new service for road users to reduce reindeer accidents.
Finland's designated reindeer herding area covers 36% of the country's total landscape and sees as many as 4000 accidents occurring on Finland's roads and railways occur per year. A variety of actions have been taken aiming to reduce the amount of accidents, but none of then have been proven effective. The extensive use of mobile technology and other intelligent devices brings forth new possibilities to help reduce the number of accidents. The warning systems relies on GPS location and mobile technology, enabling accurate warnings for road travelers.
